What is an oral or facial infection?
The constant contact our mouths and faces have with bacteria and germs makes them highly vulnerable to contract oral and facial infections. This is why your oral surgeon, dentist, and general physician encourage you to practice regular and frequent home hygiene efforts like brushing, flossing, and face and hand washing. When you don’t, you are far more likely to contract an oral or facial infection.
One of the most common infections we see is the development of a tooth abscess. A tooth abscess is formed by a bacterial infection within your oral cavity and causes a pocket of pus to develop around the infected tooth. Most of the time a tooth abscess develops as a result of periodontal disease, tooth decay, or a broken tooth. Sometimes, root canal therapy can help restore the infected tooth without an extraction. If the tooth cannot be restored with a root canal procedure, it must be removed. After the tooth is removed, your doctor will clean the area of extraction to ensure the infection has been cleared.
If the infection is severe, you may need additional treatment. Usually, this involves making a surgical incision into the infected area and draining the pus that has developed. This often requires placing a drain into the area of the abscess after the tooth has been removed. You will most likely be placed on a course of antibiotics to resolve the infection. If, however, the infection has spread to nearby vital structures or compromised your airway, you may require hospitalization and a higher level of surgical/medical management for which Dr. Poore is well trained and experienced to handle.
If you think you have an oral or facial infection, please contact our office. If you experience extreme, continuous pain around your teeth or swelling around your cheeks, teeth, or gums, we encourage you to make an appointment for an immediate consultation.
